SpartanNash prides itself on its customer focus. A key factor to delivering a quality customer experience is providing high quality customer-facing application performance. SpartanNash came to IntelliMagic looking for a storage performance analytics solution to help them with intermittent IBM V7000 storage performance problems they were experiencing. At the time they had two large 6-Node V7000 storage units, one mirroring to the other. SpartanNash used this storage for all of their Open Systems Storage; all Intel, AIX, Linux, and VMware servers over 700 systems.

“We looked at other products, but IntelliMagic Vision was the easiest to use,” says Gary Monroe the Lead Systems Administrator at SpartanNash. “IntelliMagic Vision’s ability to drill down for a closer look at performance issues, the diagnostic descriptions provided, along with the dashboard to help direct your search for a bottleneck, or other problem areas that may be causing poor performance, was key to solving our poorly performing V7000 issues.”

With the help of IntelliMagic’s technical support and using IntelliMagic Vision, SpartanNash found out that a poorly performing SSD array was causing their performance problems. The issue was resolved by firmware upgrades to the SSD. Monroe stated, “We would not have been able to do this as quickly without IntelliMagic Vision. IntelliMagic Vision even allowed us to save the report data off to files that we uploaded to IBM for use in their tools.”

With a customer facing application that has very strict response time requirements, SpartanNash uses IntelliMagic Vision to monitor any transaction exceeding performance thresholds. Monroe explained, “These transactions show up on an exception report and I receive a copy of this report three times a day, each reporting from the past 8 hours. I receive an IntelliMagic Vision Dashboard report every day to watch for any storage performance issues from the past 24 hours and I keep watch for trends of increasing utilization, deteriorating performance, or regular patterns of transaction behavior that might cause poor performance. That’s what makes IntelliMagic Vision so valuable. That knowledge of storage products and how they should perform has been written into the logic of the IntelliMagic Vision Reporter.”

Gary Monroe summarizes that, “IntelliMagic’s Technical Support staff is very knowledgeable about storage and how it should function. This is a terrific asset when you are trying to troubleshoot a performance problem. IntelliMagic’s support is among the best in the business. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for an excellent performance monitor with built-in diagnostic directives.”
