The paper analyzes the performance of Flash and SSDs when deployed in high-end storage, using measurements from production storage systems. It shows that the advertised native latencies of 100 to 150 microseconds for enterprise SSDs and Flash are not realistic expectations for actual back-end response times in a storage system, and that any differences in those native latencies between types of Flash are no longer significant when deployed in a storage system.

Dr. Meenderinck’s paper also shows that detailed knowledge of how back-end operations are performed is needed to correctly interpret the measurements. A significant portion of activity on the RAID arrays is asynchronous and shows very specific behavior that does not directly impact host I/O performance.

The paper contains important knowledge for performance analysts to help them assessing Flash performance in their enterprise storage, such that they can make informed decisions, as the measurements are not always what they appear to be.

Join Dr. Meenderinck’s session November 8th, at CMG imPACt, La Jolla, CA, and learn how to interpret Flash performance, as the measurements are not always what they appear to be.

Dr. Meenderinck received his PhD degree in computer engineering from the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands and joined IntelliMagic in 2011. His focus within IntelliMagic lies on performance modeling for enterprise storage systems. The knowledge that is gained from research like this is embedded in IntelliMagic’s software.

About IntelliMagic

IntelliMagic software outsmarts service disruptions and eliminates infrastructure inefficiencies using the power of embedded expert knowledge. It has a built-in fundamental understanding of how workloads, logical concepts and physical hardware interact. By embedding human expertise about the specific systems into the software, the predictive potential of the data is unlocked.

Some of the world’s largest corporations rely daily on IntelliMagic to proactively detect risks before issues impact production, and to find the true root causes that endanger the availability of their enterprise systems and storage. Furthermore, these companies are also able to maintain more efficient configurations with lower cost and better performance. Ultimately, IntelliMagic gives IT staff what they need to deliver a new level of application service reliability at optimal cost.
