The paper analyzes the performance of Flash and SSDs when deployed in high-end storage, using measurements from production storage systems. It shows that the advertised native latencies of 100 to 150 microseconds for enterprise SSDs and Flash are not realistic expectations for actual back-end response times in a storage system, and that any differences in those native latencies between types of Flash are no longer significant when deployed in a storage system.
Dr. Meenderinck’s paper also shows that detailed knowledge of how back-end operations are performed is needed to correctly interpret the measurements. A significant portion of activity on the RAID arrays is asynchronous and shows very specific behavior that does not directly impact host I/O performance.
The paper contains important knowledge for performance analysts to help them assessing Flash performance in their enterprise storage, such that they can make informed decisions, as the measurements are not always what they appear to be.
