The CPU Measurement Facility (CPU MF) was introduced with the z10 and contains a wealth of detailed information about processor performance. RNI, Nest, Cache 1 misses, and related metrics all contribute to the IBM software and hardware pricing models, as defined in terms of CPU MF counters.

However, interpreting the many counters populated by CPU MF is hard. With his keen mind and irrepressible curiosity, our own Dr. Gilbert Houtekamer took notice of the substantial processor cache design changes in the z16. They are sometimes seen as magic numbers from IBM’s wisdom, but it is important to gain insight into how they will impact the operation and efficiency of your workloads. In this session, Dr. Houtekamer teams up with John Baker to share some of those insights to generate additional thoughts and discussion.
