After a week of informative sessions, networking, technical workshops, and overall fun, that’s a wrap on SHARE Pittsburgh.

IntelliMagic continued our proud tradition of sponsoring SHARE and joined in on the “sharing” of knowledge with seven different sessions, covering topics from modernizing RMF/SMF performance analysis, cost savings, deep dives into Flash, CICS, and Db2, and more.

Hopefully you were able to make it out to Pittsburgh and join in on the knowledge sharing and fun (our team gets a real kick out of meeting with IT professionals and industry leaders dedicated to ensuring promoting the modernization (and longevity) of the mainframe platform), but if not we have compiled all of our presentations for you to read/watch/view at your convenience. See you at the next event!

Modernize RMF/SMF Performance Analysis – Get Ahead of the Curve with Intelligent Analysis

The skills gap in the area of z/OS performance analysis is worse than it is in other areas of the mainframe because retirements of deep experts are accelerating, and it takes a long time to build expertise in the art and science of effectively using the data.

The deep performance experts that remain are too busy to be proactive using the 30-year-old process, and the new team members need an effective way to quickly understand what is most important in all the data and how to understand it.

This session discussed and demonstrated how to solve this problem with the power of the machine and intelligent algorithms for RMF and SMF interpretation.

Do You Realize How Much You Can Learn (about almost anything) from RMF & SMF Data?

This session will introduce visibility into metrics selected from numerous areas across the z/OS infrastructure, including some metrics that are less well known (crypto activity utilization (70.2); global and local lock and enqueue serialization (72.5, 77) ), others that have historically not been the focus of in-house developed reporting (XCF (74.2); zEDC hardware compression (74.9); MQ (115); TCP/IP (119.7) ), and some for which the sheer volume of data has made traditional approaches to analysis based on catalogs of static reports very challenging (Db2 (101); CICS (110.1) ).

Discover how rapidly you could leverage easy visibility into RMF and SMF data to expand your understanding of how the z/OS ecosystem operates, and to renew the passion that led you to enter the disciplines of performance analysis or infrastructure support in the first place.

Black-Box + White-Box Analysis of RMF/SMF Performance Metrics

This session will examine the design philosophy of two approaches to solving this problem, and the pros and cons of each.

Black-box analysis refers to the assessment of metrics using statistical approaches to recognize changes and anomalies in the data. White-box analysis refers to algorithms that assess and rate the metrics using information models built from digitized expert knowledge about the best practices and architecture specific. These modernized approaches to mining RMF/CMF and SMF for performance and efficiency will be discussed from a vendor-neutral perspective along with specific real-world user case study examples.

Customer experiences saving MSU’s through CPC optimization

Reports continue to emerge of z/OS customers optimizing their CPC configurations to deliver improved performance and reduced software costs.

This session will use real world experiences to illustrate the relationship between processor cache, available MIPS, and software costs. Benefit from the experiences of Watson & Walker’s and IntelliMagic’s customers to learn multiple ways to achieve RNI (Relative Nest Intensity) Nirvana.

Flash, Flash, and more Flash: What’s in it for Me?

Flash. Is it the light on my camera, a plugin for my browser, or a superhero that runs really fast?

If you’re in IT, flash likely refers to something else: flash memory of some sort. But even then, the term is both ubiquitous and vague. The solid-state drive in your laptop; the new memory in your z14; your new “all flash” storage array. These all boast “flash” technology that promises to make everything faster.

Flash technology is not new but reductions in price and advancements in capacity are exploding adoption. There are many compelling arguments for flash – but is it the solution to all storage bottlenecks? Take a stroll with John Baker as we slow down the hype to explore the various implementations of flash technology and which, if any, can best speed up your datacenter.

Boost the Value You Derive from CICS & Db2 SMF Data through a Modernized Approach

Discover how you can derive great value from your CICS and Db2 SMF data through a modernized approach.

Instead of being overwhelmed by the massive volume of data, see how IntelliMagic Vision leverages an intuitive GUI interface with context-sensitive drilldowns to dynamically navigate through the data, raising the effectiveness of your analysis to an entirely new level.  And learn how rated health assessments of more than 100 metrics presented in easy-to-use dashboards can help you identify potential performance and availability issues before they impact production.

IBM Rolls the ‘Four-Hour’ Out the Door

Sub-capacity pricing has created an entire sub-industry, dedicated to explaining it, auditing it, and controlling it. As complex as it is, sub-cap remains fairer than paying based on installed capacity. Sub-cap allows you to pay for what you use. If only it were so simple.

How does my MSU usage really affect my bill? What about across LPARs or CECs? What about where, and/or how much I utilize various software products? What about the various flavors of caps? And, of course, what’s the deal with all these new options that IBM is providing: Mobile, Container, and Country Multiplex Pricing?

As an independent voice, John Baker explains all these options.

Why Am I Still Seeing zIIP Eligible Work?

zIIP-eligible CPU consumption that overflows onto general purpose CPs (GCPs) – known as “zIIP crossover” - is a key focal point for software cost savings. However, despite your meticulous efforts, it is possible that zIIP crossover work is still consuming GCP cycles unnecessarily.
